May 11-15 Week 6
Parents, feel free to take pictures of your child doing the activities or their completed work and email to their teacher!
Remember: Please do what you can, but be flexible if it doesn't work. If you notice that your child is struggling, try together, don't get frustrated and end with a smile.
Monday
Measurement
There are many ways to measure things. This week we are going to explore measuring objects with our body.
What parts of our body can we use? Fingers? Hands? Feet? Whole body?
Watch Sid the Science Guy investigate non standard measurement
Pick 3 objects in your house to measure. What is the best body part to use?
Watch Allistair measure a chair, a bed and a driveway.
Which body part did he choose to help him measure? Did he make a good choice? What do you need to remember when you measure? Hint: heel to toe
Tuesday
Math Games
Math game day is a classroom favorite - Maybe it will become one of yours at home learning favorites too! Try out this MAKE 10 Go fish! This Youtube video shows how to play!
A few notes:
- Make sure before you play to remove all of the face cards (jack, queen, king) from the deck.
- 10’s are special cards. We know that 10+0=10. If you draw a 10, you can put it down in your ‘ways to make 10’ pile. It does not need to be a pair
Not all students will have their 10 facts memorized and that is ok. They might need a ‘cheat sheet’ when they first begin to play.
Wednesday
Math Journal
You have 26 pieces of popcorn in a bowl. If you dumped them out, how could you organize them to make it easy for a friend to count? Can you think of more than one way to organize your popcorn?
Teaching Tip: Offer your child manipulatives (something concrete to represent the popcorn) as hands-on support to sort out their thinking before they record in their Journal.
Thursday
+2 -2
Write down 10 or more numbers (easy 1-10, medium 11-20, hard random)
Write the numbers down, Put them in a cup
Pull out a number and write it in the middle of a page
Write the number that is 2 more (+2) on the right and the number that is 2 less (-2) on the left.
If your child found this very difficult, they can practice with +1 and -1!
